[Financial News] Why Breast Implants Are Becoming a Burden for Middle-Aged Women

Mrs. Choi (52), a housewife, is considering breast re-surgery after returning from a recent trip to Europe. This is because she saw an elderly woman in a bikini on the beach and was reminded of herself. With her thin build, the outline of her breast implants was clearly visible, making it obvious to anyone that she had surgery.

Ms. Choi also underwent breast augmentation using artificial implants at the age of forty. She had always been self-conscious about her breasts due to her slender build, but she was satisfied with the results thanks to a good opportunity. However, as she aged and lost weight and her skin thinned, the outline of the implants seemed to become noticeable, causing her to avoid even going to public baths.

While breast augmentation with implants offers high satisfaction due to its permanent volume enhancement, some women occasionally regret it as they enter their later years. The problem is that as skin elasticity declines compared to their youth, the implants inside the breasts appear excessively prominent. However, undergoing revision surgery, such as switching to smaller implants, is burdensome, so they often end up neglecting the issue.

If you have undergone breast augmentation using implants, consistent care and attention are required even after the procedure.

On the 21st, Shin Dong-jin, director of SC301 Clinic, emphasized, “No matter how delicately breast implants are implanted, their durability is bound to decrease over time,” adding, “In severe cases, problems such as capsular contracture, where the tissue surrounding the implant hardens, may occur.”

She added, “Women who have undergone breast augmentation surgery with breast implants should check their breast health at least once every two years through X-rays, ultrasounds, and MRIs.”

If implants are too noticeable and have atrophied, 'stem cell autologous fat grafting' can be an alternative to re-inserting implants. It is free from side effects as it eliminates the hassle of replacing implants and the risk of capsular contracture.

Stem cell breast augmentation utilizes a method of harvesting fat from the patient's own thighs, abdomen, etc., to restore breast volume. It is attracting attention for minimizing the foreign sensation caused by implant insertion and raising the engraftment rate to 70%, overcoming the limitations of simple fat grafting surgery, which was previously low (10–30%).

The key point is to first isolate pure fat cells, extract high-quality stem cells from them, and transplant them into the breasts along with the fat cells. Stem cells contain a large amount of growth factors and generate blood vessels, which minimizes the amount of transplanted fat absorbed into the body, allowing the procedure to be completed in a single session without the need for touch-ups. Patient satisfaction is high because it also offers the benefits of liposuction, such as removing unwanted fat from areas like the abdomen or thighs to add volume.

Director Shin Dong-jin enhanced the credibility of the procedure by presenting these findings in his master's thesis at Shandong University School of Medicine in China. In his thesis titled "Analysis of Clinical Effects of Fat Graft Breast Augmentation Surgery Using Adult Adipose Stem Cells," he raised the engraftment rate of fat cells and stem cells to over 70% through breast augmentation.
He said, “Proving a stable engraftment rate of around 70% with stem cell breast augmentation is of great international significance,” adding, “Stem cell breast augmentation has differentiated advantages such as complementing the shortcomings of conventional implant surgery, such as capsular contracture, rupture, and leakage, while remaining natural-looking without visible signs of surgery and causing no foreign body sensation. This research result will further promote the use of the procedure.”

Director Shin Dong-jin pointed out, “Middle-aged women considering stem cell breast augmentation should be even more cautious,” adding, “Satisfactory results cannot be expected if the skin is thinner and fat is insufficient compared to younger people.” He further added, “At SC301 Clinic, we first assess the overall physical condition, including body fat mass, and implement pre-operative care tailored to the situation to fill in high-quality fat before proceeding with surgery, taking measures to ensure the desired volume can be achieved.” pompom@fnnews.com Reporter Jeong Myeong-jin
