Is there a way to restore firmness to sagging breasts after childbirth?

One of the major changes that women are highly concerned about after childbirth is breast sagging. During pregnancy, breast tissue enlarges due to hormonal influences, and as weight increases and fat accumulates, the breasts become slightly fuller than usual. However, once hormones return to normal after childbirth, these tissues shrink again, causing a loss of elasticity and making sagging likely. 

Dr. Shin Dong-jin, director of SC301 Clinic, stated, “Once breastfeeding ends, the body’s hormonal balance is disrupted, causing the mammary glands, mammary lobes, ducts, and fatty tissue to all begin to atrophy.” He added, “Subsequently, the breasts begin to lose elasticity and sag.” A significant number of housewives feel depressed due to their appearance being so different from when they were single.

That is not all. As aging progresses, even chest muscles shrink. Director Shin explained, “In women, muscle mass begins to decrease in the order of the buttocks, thighs, and chest, making it easy for the body shape to become flat.” He added, “In particular, the chest maintains a soft shape through the combination of internal fat and mammary glands, which are supported by Cooper’s ligaments; however, if the collagen components that make up these ligaments become insufficient, elasticity decreases, causing the breasts to naturally sag downwards.”

To restore firmness to sagging breasts, applying anti-wrinkle creams and massaging the area can be helpful. It is even better to pay attention to the neck, shoulders, and collarbone, which support the breasts. However, there are certainly limitations to directly filling or lifting sagging breasts. 

In such cases, surgical treatment may be considered. Recently, with naturalness and safety becoming the mainstream trends, the popularity of 'stem cell breast augmentation' is rising to rival that of breast implant surgery. This is a kind of 'upgraded version' that complements the existing simple autologous fat grafting procedure.

Simple fat grafting is safe as it uses the patient's own fat without causing foreign body sensations or rejection reactions, but its disadvantage is that most of the transplanted fat cells are absorbed into the body. In contrast, stem cell breast augmentation addresses this drawback. It is similar in that it utilizes adipose tissue harvested from areas where unwanted fat has accumulated, such as the thighs or abdomen. However, by transplanting stem cells extracted from the adipose tissue along with the fat cells into areas like the breasts, the survival and engraftment rates of the fat cells can be significantly increased.

Although it varies from person to person, approximately 1000 cc of fat can be extracted based on an average body type. Typically, the amount of fat transplanted to one breast is about 200 to 250 cc, which is similar to the size of commonly used implants.

Director Shin Dong-jin explained, “If fat cells are simply transplanted, they are absorbed and lost to the original breast tissue after a short time. To overcome this, stem cells must be extracted from the fat tissue, mixed with purified fat cells in a specific ratio, and then injected into the breasts.”

He continued, “The reason stem cell breast augmentation looks more natural than autologous fat grafting is that it uses your own stem cells,” adding, “Just like inflating a balloon, injecting stem cells and fat cells together fills the volume while maintaining your original breast shape.”

Director Shin is the first person to introduce breast and facial surgery using stem cells in a field of cosmetic surgery that had previously relied solely on implants. 
He possesses know-how from over 2000 experiences with stem cell cosmetic surgery and is currently researching stem cell plastic surgery as the president of the Korean Society of Stem Cell Plastic Surgery.
