Recently, as the value of 'appearance' has increased in society, it is not uncommon for middle-aged people to undergo plastic surgery for a 'second life.' Mrs. Choi (53), a housewife, had plastic surgery, including double eyelid surgery and rhinoplasty, after her youngest child entered college last year. It was a gift from her husband, who said, 'Thank you for raising the children well.'

She successfully transformed her image with clearer eyes and a sharp nose, and her marital relationship also improved after the surgery. Ms. Choi said, "No matter what anyone says, it seems women must take care of their appearance even as they age," adding, "My self-esteem has risen significantly, not only because of the successful surgery results but also thanks to my husband's changed attitude."

As husbands age, they become more tolerant of the fact that their spouses undergo plastic surgery to maintain their femininity. They want their wives to remain beautiful and not age. Women are also bound to take an interest in plastic surgery, as they seek to "return to their femininity" to regain confidence and are aware of their husbands' thoughts.

However, quite a few middle-aged women do not have the same resilience as they did when they were young, and they cannot easily decide to undergo surgery for fear of receiving disapproving looks from those around them asking, "Why are you acting so foolishly late in life?"

"Recently, there are quite a few cases among middle-aged women where they decide to undergo plastic surgery in the hope of restoring their estranged marital affection," said Shin Dong-jin, director of Apgujeong SC301 Clinic. "There are also many unfortunate cases where they try to win back their spouse's heart by becoming beautiful, even when the spouse avoids marital life or has an affair."

Among these, breast augmentation is as popular as facial surgery. While a youthful appearance is important, it is the breasts that complete feminine beauty. It is also the part of the body that loses elasticity first due to aging and breastfeeding.

Middle-aged individuals tend to prefer "autologous fat graft breast augmentation," in which fat tissue is harvested from the abdomen or thighs and transplanted into the breasts, rather than injecting foreign substances into the body. It offers a double benefit as the process of harvesting fat also helps to remove age-related fat. However, the downsides are that the engraftment survival rate is low, ranging from 20% to 30%, and the results last for only about a year.

Director Shin Dong-jin utilized stem cells to raise the engraftment rate of fat cells to over 70% and proved their effectiveness and safety through two research papers. He stated, “When fat-derived adult stem cells contained in a patient’s adipose tissue are injected into fat grafting surgery, the engraftment rate can be increased through the stem cells’ immunosuppressive response, resulting anti-inflammatory effects, differentiation into fat cells, cartilage cells, bone cells, and muscle cells, and the induction of angiogenesis.” He introduced stem cell breast augmentation as an “eco-friendly medical technology in that it is biocompatible and does not use artificial chemicals.”

He analyzed the results of stem cell breast augmentation on 200 patients in their 20s to 50s who were available for follow-up observation over a one-year period in 2013, and found that chest circumference increased by an average of approximately 5 cm regardless of age. The women who underwent the procedure received injections of fat cells and stem cells ranging from over 90 cc to a maximum of 260 cc into each breast.

However, middle-aged individuals are often apprehensive about potential poor outcomes before undergoing plastic surgery. This fear stems from concerns that, compared to younger people, their lower skin elasticity might require a long time for recovery, such as for scars to heal.

Director Shin Dong-jin explained, “In the case of middle-aged women, the results are often actually better than for younger women,” adding, “The outcomes are significantly better because sagging skin improves and breasts that have sunken due to breastfeeding are restored.” He further added, “While health warning signs such as diabetes and high blood pressure may appear as one ages, healthy individuals who manage their health well can safely undergo surgery.”
