◇ Integrating stem cells to increase fat cell engraftment rate

According to data from the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety, there were 428 reported side effects related to breast implants in 2011. The most common side effects were implant rupture (39.1%), leakage and deformation (30.1%), and hardening of the tissue surrounding the implant (22.9%). The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has also stated that since two out of ten implants may rupture or leak after 10 years of breast augmentation, patients should undergo annual MRI scans starting 10 years after surgery. The FDA has also recommended that silicone implants be replaced within 8 to 10 years of implantation for safety.

As concerns over the side effects of breast implants grow, stem cell breast augmentation has emerged as an alternative surgical method. Dr. Shin Dong-jin, director of SC301 Clinic, stated, "This method involves extracting fat from the patient's abdomen or thighs to isolate stem cells, then mixing them with pure fat cells before transplanting them into the breasts." He added, "The advantages of this surgical technique include the absence of the foreign body sensation associated with implant insertion, the hassle of replacing implants every 10 years, and the risk of surrounding tissue hardening." Breast augmentation using only fat cells had the disadvantage of shrinking breast size shortly after surgery as the fat was absorbed into the breast tissue. However, it is said that extracting stem cells and mixing them in a specific ratio before transplanting increases the survival rate of the fat cells, resulting in significantly better surgical outcomes.

◇ Choose medical staff equipped with equipment and extensive surgical experience

There are also precautions to take when undergoing stem cell breast augmentation. To prevent fat cell necrosis and maximize engraftment rates, an appropriate number of adipose-derived adult stem cells must be transplanted for each patient. For this reason, Dr. Shin Dong-jin stated, “You should undergo surgery at a hospital that is properly equipped with devices to extract stem cells and has proven its safety to some extent through clinical trials lasting one to two years or more.” Since stem cell breast augmentation has only recently become available, patients should select a hospital after verifying the extent of research being conducted, the equipment used, and the level of surgical experience. In particular, it is advisable to choose a facility equipped with a cell counter, a device used to monitor the progress of the surgery.
