It is not uncommon to see senior women around us who have regained their youth by smoothing out fine wrinkles and gaining volume after receiving adipose-derived stem cell injections. Furthermore, there are foreign media reports indicating that in patients with heart disease, stem cell therapy has increased blood circulation, reduced vascular inflammation, and consequently lowered the risk of death. Amidst these diverse applications, such as the treatment of anemia and intractable metabolic diseases, experts both at home and abroad anticipate that stem cells will even change the paradigm regarding skin aging caused by UV rays, burns, and radiation exposure.

Concerns over side effects of breast implant surgery, such as implant rupture or capsular contracture

In Korea, stem cells are being utilized in a wide range of fields, including knee arthritis, ischemic vascular disease, alopecia, lymphedema, and plastic surgery. SCDr. Shin Dong-jin, director of 301 Clinic, stated, “Stem cells promote the regeneration and proliferation of fat cells, cartilage cells, blood vessels, and hair, making them effective for plastic surgery, knee arthritis, ischemic and necrotizing vascular diseases, and hair loss.” Plastic surgery using stem cells is primarily performed on areas lacking volume. By extracting fat from areas such as the abdomen or thighs, extracting stem cells from the fat, and transplanting them to the desired areas, volume can be restored to deficient areas, and wrinkled or sagging skin and tissues can be revitalized.

Stem cell breast augmentation began in earnest in Korea in 2008. While the majority of medical consumers still associate "breast augmentation" with "breast implant insertion," the proportion of stem cell breast augmentation is surpassing 10% of total breast surgeries.

Silicone gel breast implants, which were introduced in earnest in the late 1980s, have been loved by many women for 30 years. This is because they are relatively inexpensive and can create full breasts in a short period of time. According to an investigation by the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety, the number of side effects such as breast implant rupture and capsular contracture decreased from 1176 cases in 2013 to 940 cases in 2014, 985 cases in 2015, and 657 cases in 2016.

Recognized for standardizing stem cell cosmetic procedures through over 5000 clinical trials SCDr. Shin Dong-jin, director of 301 Clinic, explained, “Due to their physical characteristics, artificial implants are bound to rupture or leak eventually. It is ultimately only a matter of time before implant rupture or capsular contracture occurs after implantation,” adding, “The medical community estimates that these side effects occur in 40% of all implanted implants after approximately 10 years.”

If an implant ruptures, it can cause inflammation and necrosis in the breast tissue. When an implant is inserted into the breast, existing cellular tissue surrounds the implant to protect it from injury. As a result, this leads to capsular contracture, where the breast hardens or becomes uneven in shape.

Biocompatible stem cell breast augmentation with low risk of side effects

In contrast, stem cell breast augmentation carries no risk of implant rupture or leakage, produces a natural breast shape after surgery, and is biocompatible. This method involves extracting fat from the patient's abdomen or thighs, separating the stem cells, mixing them with pure fat cells in an optimal ratio, and injecting them into the breasts.

Stem cells help differentiate and proliferate adjacent cells or tissues, and because they provide more tenacious vitality, the engraftment rate exceeds 70%. However, in autologous fat grafting breast augmentation, which simply involves purifying fat from the abdomen or thighs and injecting it into the breasts, the engraftment rate is only 20–30% because a large amount of fat cells self-destruct without the help of stem cells.

Director Shin Dong-jin stated, “I have been dedicated to research on stem cell breast augmentation since 2007, and since the end of 2013, I have been making various efforts to prevent the spread of ‘fake’ stem cell breast augmentation. As women in their 30s and 40s are gradually recognizing the advantages of breast augmentation using stem cell fat grafting, I expect that stem cell procedures will account for 30% of all breast augmentations within the next three years.” He added, “Occasionally, there are patients who complain that the post-operative fullness of stem cell breast augmentation is less pronounced than with implants. However, it offers the advantages of avoiding the potential risks associated with implants, providing a natural and voluptuous appearance without a foreign body sensation. Satisfaction with plastic surgery is higher when it is an independent choice made for oneself, rather than being conscious of others’ eyes.”
