[Chosun Ilbo] Leading the Korean Wave in Stem Cell Breast Augmentation… Follow-up Research Also in Denmark

Stem cells are being actively used not only in treatment but also in the fields of cosmetic surgery. Recently, breast augmentation surgery utilizing stem cells harvested from fat has been gaining attention. Following the announcement by a domestic research team last February that they had raised the engraftment rate of breast augmentation cells to 75% using fat-derived stem cells, a follow-up study was recently released in Denmark.


A research team led by Dr. Fredrik Köl of Aleris Hamlet Hospital in Denmark announced in the international journal *Translational Medicine* that they "successfully performed breast augmentation surgery using in vitro proliferation of adipose-derived stem cells."


The research team tracked 12 patients who underwent breast augmentation surgery for up to five years. The breast volume of those who received stem cell breast augmentation increased 2.6 times compared to before the surgery, and the engraftment rate reached 80.5%. In contrast, the engraftment rate for patients who received simple fat grafting surgery was only 45.1%. The researchers explained, "In cases where breast augmentation is necessary due to breast cancer or congenital breast deformities, combining pure fat cells with fat-derived stem cells can replace implant treatment," adding, "The results are beautiful and have sufficient volume, eliminating the need for additional treatment."

This figure is significantly higher than the 20–30% engraftment rate of simple fat grafting surgery. It was the culmination of 15 years of basic medical research and over 6000 procedures conducted by Director Shin.



Standard breast augmentation involves the insertion of silicone implants. However, safety is difficult to guarantee. It is known that about 40% of patients experience capsular contracture (hardening of the tissue surrounding the implant) or rupture approximately 10 years after surgery. Since 2011, breast implants have been linked to anaplastic large cell lymphocytes, a rare cancer.Criticism has been consistently raised that it could cause 'species'. Last July, in Korea, the U.S. company Allergan's 보형물 Recall measures were also issued.


When using stem cells extracted from fat, concerns about immune rejection can be alleviated because the patient's own cells are injected into the treatment site. Director Shin stated, "There is almost no foreign body sensation, and unlike silicone, it produces a natural breast shape." He added, "If in vitro stem cell proliferation for breast augmentation is permitted in Korea, we can expect even more advanced results."
