Recently, "stem cell breast augmentation" has been trending among women seeking to enhance their beauty. With the growing desire for a slim figure, a significant number of women are obsessed with weight loss 365 days a year. Unless they were born with naturally blessed breast sizes, prolonged dieting inevitably leads to the "disappearance of breasts." While a skinny, tomboyish physique with androgynous charm was popular in the past, the situation has changed recently. The prevailing trend is to regard a "dream body"—emphasizing healthy beauty with curves in all the right places—as the standard.

However, undergoing surgery using artificial implants is burdensome. This is because there are quite a few cases where the implants stand out too much, even when wearing clothes, leading to unnatural results. Although technology has improved and natural-looking breast implants are now available, they inevitably fall short compared to autologous fat in terms of tactile sensation.

Traditional fat grafting, developed to prevent rejection and side effects associated with implants, is safe but has the disadvantage of a low engraftment rate, meaning the volume achieved immediately after surgery disappears over time. Stem cell plastic surgery is a surgical method designed to address these shortcomings.

Dr. Shin Dong-jin, director of Apgujeong SC301 Clinic, explained, “Stem cell fat grafting involves isolating stem cells from a portion of centrifuged fat, mixing them with pure fat, and transplanting them to the necessary areas.” He added, “The reason stem cell breast augmentation looks more natural than autologous fat grafting is that it uses the patient’s own stem cells; it can be likened to a balloon. You can think of it as swelling up to maintain the original shape of your breasts.”

Director Shin advanced the stem cell breast augmentation method, raising the engraftment rate of transplanted fat cells to over 70%. He recently released the results of an analysis of breast augmentation outcomes for 200 patients in their 20s to 50s, whose post-operative progress was observed over the course of 2013. Regardless of age, the average chest circumference increased by approximately 5 cm, and the women who underwent the procedure received injections of over 90 cc and up to 260 cc of fat and stem cells per breast.

Stem cells are broadly classified into three types: embryonic stem cells, adult stem cells, and induced pluripotent stem cells. Embryonic stem cells are considered pluripotent cells capable of differentiating into all cells that make up the human body, excluding the placenta; however, ethical issues cannot be ignored because they must be extracted from blastocyst embryos just before implantation or from fetuses aborted between 8 and 12 weeks of pregnancy.

While adult stem cells, which can be extracted from bone marrow, blood, and adipose tissue, are easy to produce, their effectiveness is limited as they differentiate into only a few cell types.

Induced pluripotent stem cells are created by injecting transcription factors (gene expression regulatory proteins) into fully differentiated somatic cells to turn them into pre-differentiated stem cells, such as embryonic stem cells. They are also called "induced pluripotent stem cells" because they induce stem cells capable of developing into any type of cell, as if turning back the clock. This method was devised by Shinya Yamanaka of Japan, who won the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine (2012) in the shortest amount of time.
