[Edaily] Stem cell surgery helps increase breast volume



[Edaily Reporter Lee Soon-yong] As breast augmentation techniques advance, medical consumers considering surgery are likely to struggle at some point over which method to choose. Breast augmentation methods are broadly divided into implant insertion and autologous fat injection. 

Breast augmentation with implants offers high satisfaction as a single surgery provides a permanent volume increase. However, as skin elasticity declines in old age, the implants may appear to float unnaturally. Furthermore, no matter how meticulously implanted, the durability of breast implants inevitably decreases over time. In severe cases, problems such as capsular contracture, where the tissue surrounding the implant hardens, may occur.

"Autologous fat grafting," which emerged in the early 2000s, is a procedure that achieves breast enlargement by injecting one's own fat to eliminate the foreign body sensation associated with implants. It gained popularity among women who wanted to add breast volume without looking like they had undergone surgery. Furthermore, it was regarded as a dream procedure for sculpting an S-line figure, as the process of harvesting fat to fill the breasts also involved removing excess fat. However, a limitation is that the survival rate of the fat tissue absorbed into the body after the procedure is low, ranging from 10% to 20%. Considering this, injecting excessive amounts of fat can lead to side effects such as necrosis or calcification, causing secondary problems and causing its popularity to wane.

In 2008, Shin Dong-jin, Director of SC301 Clinic, introduced "Stem Cell Breast Augmentation," a procedure designed to address the limitations of autologous fat grafting, specifically the "engraftment rate." The procedure follows the same process as conventional fat grafting up to the point of harvesting fat from areas such as the abdomen or thighs. However, it differs in that fat-derived adult stem cells are extracted, mixed with pre-purified fat cells in an appropriate ratio, and injected into the breasts. It is known that 3000 million to 1 million stem cells are injected using state-of-the-art equipment. During the fat injection process for full breast enlargement, a patented capsule is administered to enhance the engraftment rate, and afterwards, the patient enters an oxygen chamber for post-operative care to ensure the fat cells properly settle.  

Director Shin enhanced credibility by establishing data on such engraftment rates. Starting in 2007, he began research combining stem cells with cosmetic procedures, successfully raising the engraftment rate to the 70% range, and published these findings in an academic journal of Shandong University School of Medicine in China from 2012 to 2015. This is significant in that it standardized previously inconsistent procedures and produced reliable clinical data. 

Director Shin introduced the procedure, stating, “Stem cell breast augmentation allows for satisfactory results without side effects with just a single surgery because the transplanted fat is minimally lost. Compared to implant insertion, there is less concern about side effects such as capsular contracture, and it satisfies women with a natural volume that looks as if no surgery was performed.”

Most notably, successful surgical results have been achieved even in slender women. Asian women are genetically predisposed to having smaller physiques and smaller breasts. Realistically, it is difficult to achieve the societal demand for a body type that is "slender yet has large breasts" without surgery. In Korean society, where dieting has become commonplace, a significant number of women not only have limited fat available for harvesting but also tend to have low engraftment rates.
