Development of safe breast augmentation using stem cells… Achieved a 70% engraftment rate, recognized as a pioneer in stem cell cosmetic surgery

Dr. Shin Dong-jin, Representative Director of SC301 Clinic (Dermatology Clinic), received the 'Best Executive in Medical Technology' award for the second consecutive year, following last year, at the '2016 5th Korea Knowledge Management Awards' ceremony held at the National Assembly Constitutional Memorial Hall on the 4th.

The Knowledge Management Award is presented to discover and recognize the best business leaders, politicians, and artists who have created successful knowledge management cases across all fields, including politics, economy, society, and culture, as pillars of future national industry.

Through rigorous deliberation, the best individuals and organizations in Korean knowledge management who have distinguished themselves throughout the year are selected, contributing to the fostering of a knowledge management culture. It is hosted by Asia LOHAS News Magazine and the Korea Brain Association, and organized by the Korea Knowledge Management Awards Organizing Committee.

Director Shin Dong-jin is a pioneer in stem cell cosmetic surgery who developed eco-friendly and safe breast augmentation using stem cells. In a field of breast surgery that previously relied solely on artificial implants, he was the first in Korea to introduce a technique applying adipose-derived stem cells, extracted from the patient's own abdomen or thighs, to breast and facial surgeries by combining them with pure fat cells in a golden ratio.

Simple autologous fat grafting breast augmentation is currently prevalent in the market, targeting patients who are reluctant to undergo procedures due to an aversion to artificial implants. While safe and free from foreign body sensation, a limitation is pointed out: the transplanted fat is absorbed by the tissue, leading to a reduction in the remaining volume. To address this shortcoming, Director Shin is developing an upgraded version called 'Stem Cell Breast Augmentation.'

He developed a breast augmentation technique that fully utilizes the proliferation-inducing effects of stem cells, raising the engraftment rate of transplanted fat cells from the conventional 20–30% to over 70%. Based on the publication of his third paper in August 2015, he demonstrated an average engraftment rate of 76%. By proving the efficacy and safety of stem cell-based cosmetic surgery through academic papers, he enhanced the credibility of the surgery. As the President of the Korean Society of Stem Cell Plastic Surgery, Director Shin Dong-jin is passing on his experience of over 3000 stem cell cosmetic surgeries to senior and junior doctors. At the same time, he is constantly conducting research to apply surgical methods tailored to each individual and to achieve highly satisfactory results.

A representative example is the development and patent application for a 'tissue regeneration composition for fat transplant' that enhances the survival rate of autologous fat grafts. He has already patented pre- and post-operative care methods for stem cell breast augmentation and is in the process of trademarking VBA Stem Cell Breast Augmentation and Choice Stem Cell Anti-Aging Surgery.

Thanks to these research efforts and word-of-mouth about dramatic breast augmentation results, the number of overseas medical tourists is also gradually increasing. Director Shin visits China at least twice a year, acting as a vanguard of medical diplomacy; by leading the entry of domestic medical technology into China and attracting foreign patients, he is elevating the status of the 'Medical Hallyu'.
