Dr. Shin Dong-jin, director of SC301 Clinic, gave a new life to a woman who had lost one breast to breast cancer and was feeling a sense of loss as a woman.

The protagonist of this story, Ms. Kim, has been enduring painful days suffering from back pain due to her asymmetrical chest following cancer surgery. Having struggled to raise her daughter alone without a husband, she could not even dream of breast reconstruction surgery.

Upon hearing this story, Director Shin decided to support the surgery. Ms. Kim, who emerged after completing stem cell breast reconstruction surgery, expressed her joy, saying, “It feels like even my emotional wounds have been healed.”

The number of breast cancer patients in Korea increased from 3,000 in 1996 to over 16,000 in 2010, a fourfold increase over 15 years. Breast reconstruction surgery is the only option that can offer hope to breast cancer patients.

Director Shin Dong-jin explained, “Since implants are foreign substances rather than one’s own body, there are limitations in making them similar to real breasts in terms of feel and shape.” He added, “To compensate for this, autologous fat grafting is utilized; however, because the survival rate of engrafted fat is low with simple fat grafting alone, stem cell breast augmentation is being widely used recently.” As a breast surgeon, he is at the forefront of protecting women’s breast health.

The broadcast on this day also featured Director Shin visiting a living community for the disabled in Pocheon, Gyeonggi Province. Twenty-nine disabled individuals with nowhere else to go live there, and Director Shin, unable to overlook their unfortunate circumstances, has been providing support and volunteering for the past four years. Medical volunteering is a given, but he does not shy away from menial tasks, such as fertilizing the vegetable garden.

On the 15th, I visited a community for people with disabilities with my colleagues, personally procured meat and vegetables for 50 people, and organized a meat party.

Director Shin Dong-jin said, “The reason I work hard as a doctor is to help many sick people,” adding, “I am dreaming of great hope through sharing.”
