One in 25 women in Korea develops breast cancer. While patients are primarily in their 40s, given that the average life expectancy for women is 85.5 years, it is advisable to develop a habit of early screening to maintain a healthy life in later years. The increase in breast cancer among Korean women is attributed to congenital factors. Breast cancer originates in mammary gland tissue, and more than half of Korean women have dense breasts, where mammary gland tissue makes up the majority of their breast tissue compared to fat. Consequently, the rate of increase in breast cancer in Korea stands at 90.7%, ranking first in the world.

Director Shin emphasized, “The best approach is regular checkups, and one should make self-examination a part of daily life.” Self-examinations should be performed 3 to 5 days after the end of menstruation each month, while postmenopausal women should set a specific day each month. First, visually observe the breast size, skin condition, and nipple discharge when both arms are raised and lowered. Afterward, massage the area with your fingertips while holding one arm up. Check for lumps by moving in a clockwise circular motion starting from the outer edge of the chest; if a lump is found, it should be considered a cause for concern. Ms. Hong Yeo-jin is another case where she discovered her breast cancer after following a self-examination routine while watching a TV program. The broadcast on this day helped viewers understand the patterns and types of breast cancer that can be identified through self-examination by examining a woman from a famous painting.

Regarding bras, he emphasized that while there is some controversy and they cannot be considered a direct cause of breast cancer, wearing them for extended periods is detrimental to breast health, as the underwire compresses the breasts.

While early diagnosis is crucial for breast cancer, post-operative care is equally important, as treatment often leads to a mastectomy. Dr. Shin Dong-jin introduced breast reconstruction surgery as a viable option in such cases. The reconstructive procedure he recommends is "stem cell fat grafting." This involves harvesting fat, separating only the pure fat cells, and then extracting stem cells from a specific amount of fat to transplant both the pure fat and pure stem cells together. Stem cell breast augmentation is advantageous because it helps maintain a natural appearance after surgery, making the breasts look as if they were one's own rather than artificial. By transplanting both fat and stem cells, the low engraftment rate—a limitation of conventional simple fat grafting—has been improved. Dr. Shin emphasized, "Many cases of breast cancer do not present with significant pain until the disease reaches the terminal stage," adding, "There is a need for proactive management, such as early screenings."
