Medical Revolution 'Stem Cells'... Dramatic Volume When Used in Breast Augmentation

Stem cells are regarded as a miracle created by the recent revolution in medical and scientific technology and are considered the latest medical technology.

As interest in stem cells grew, on the 19th of last month, SBS Special introduced stem cells under the theme of 'A Miracle for You, Medical Revolution'.

Stem cells are not limited to merely improving diseases and maintaining health; they are also playing a significant role in the field of cosmetic surgery. Stem cells create a synergistic effect when combined with autologous fat grafting, which primarily adds volume to areas where it is needed.

Dr. Shin Dong-jin, director of SC301 Clinic, appeared as a consultant on the SBS Special aired on the 19th and introduced breast augmentation using stem cells.

Stem cell cosmetic surgery is a surgical method that represents a step forward from the conventional autologous fat grafting technique used to add volume to the face or chest. It involves extracting excess fat from areas such as the thighs or abdomen, centrifuging it, mixing it with high-quality pure fat and adult stem cells, and then transplanting the mixture to areas requiring volume.

He is a leading figure who pioneered the use of stem cells in breast and facial surgeries for the first time in a field of cosmetic surgery that had previously relied solely on artificial implants. Currently serving as the President of the Korean Society of Stem Cell Plastic Surgery, he possesses experience in over 2000 stem cell cosmetic surgeries. Furthermore, he has actively conducted research related to stem cells in the field of cosmetic surgery, raising the engraftment rate to over 70% and proving their efficacy and safety through two published papers.

The limitation of conventional autologous fat grafting is that the engraftment rate is only 20–30%, resulting in low satisfaction after the procedure. To compensate for this, excessive fat is injected during surgery, which can lead to unnatural results in the face or breasts. A more significant problem, however, is the side effects such as fat necrosis and calcification that occur when the engraftment fails to properly take hold due to the injection of large amounts of fat.

Fat necrosis refers to the death of a part of a cell or tissue.

Director Shin Dong-jin pointed out, “If fat is injected excessively without considering the patient’s available transplant space to prevent absorption and loss by tissues, there is a concern that this phenomenon may occur because the transplanted fat cannot breathe.”

He also added, “Calcification refers to the appearance of hard, stone-like lumps in the area where fat was grafted; this also occurs when an excessive amount of fat is injected or when the technique for handling the fat is inadequate, resulting in it not being injected evenly into the appropriate locations.”

Stem cell cosmetic surgery is a procedure that compensates for the disadvantages of autologous fat grafting and increases the survival rate of the grafted fat. Because the survival rate is significantly higher than that of autologous fat grafting, it is safe, and satisfactory results can be obtained with just a single procedure without the need for touch-ups.

Thorough pre-operative examinations are conducted to preserve each patient's individual physical structure and characteristics. At this hospital, Director Shin Dong-jin personally performs all surgeries. There is no risk of encountering a "shadow doctor," and the chief director ensures high surgical quality by operating on only two cases per day.
